Levittown, NY: America’s First Suburb with a Rich History

Levittown is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in Nassau County, New York. Known as America’s first truly mass-produced suburb, Levittown has become an iconic symbol of post-World War II suburban development in the United States.

History and Development

Levittown was developed between 1947 and 1951 by the firm of Levitt & Sons, Inc., founded by Abraham Levitt and his sons William and Alfred. Key points in its history include:

  • Originally built as a planned community for returning World War II veterans
  • Named after the Levitt family, who also built similar communities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Puerto Rico
  • Transformed from the underdeveloped area of Island Trees to Levittown in 1948
  • By 1951, over 17,000 Levitt-designed homes were built in the area
